(Judging by the size of collections, the National Library of China is the eighth-largest library in the world, with 31.1 million items. Based in Beijing, the National Library acts as a repository for important literary works that define and shape Chinese culture, plus Chinese historical artifacts and other works collected from around the world.

This building was opened in 1987, when the library was still known as the Peking Library, a name it had for most of the 20th century. But in 1999, officials changed it to the National Library of China.)
